Quality discharge teaching for patients is crucial for optimal outcomes but can be challenging in an outpatient setting. In addition to health literacy and language barrier issues that are universal to patient education, clinicians in outpatient settings are tasked with educating patient who are undergoing sedation, which may impact a person’s memory.

Representatives from Mercyhealth Hospital and Trauma Center shared how they addressed these challenges head on and implemented a streamlined process for patient education that also improved patient satisfaction. This new workflow not only created greater clinical efficiencies, but more importantly, there was a significant increase in patients reporting being better informed about how to care for themselves at home.
