When you're not feeling well, waiting a week or longer to see a doctor isn't your only option. Thanks to the growing trend of telemedicine, you can visit an experienced, board-certified physician almost any time of day or night. Hims is one of the only telehealth providers that's exclusively for men.

Beyond basic primary care services, doctors on Hims can treat hair loss, erectile dysfunction, and other problems that men commonly experience. Hims also offers psychiatric care, including assessments for depression and anxiety. Its comprehensive list of services means that you can get the care you need from the comfort of your home.

Our review: Hims is a solid choice for men's wellness as well as primary care and assessments for mental health. Wait times for an appointment are typically brief, and you can see a doctor whenever it suits your schedule best.

How Does Hims Work?

On the Hims platform, you’ll speak with a doctor over the phone or via any compatible desktop computer. A primary care visit is just $39 per session, and if you need mental health care, the first appointment is $59. The subscription services Hims offers for men’s wellness treatment plans are not covered by insurance.

Prices for these plans vary depending on your condition and the type of medication you get. Aside from men’s health care, Hims also treats most of the same issues that a primary care doctor or urgent care clinic does. Prescriptions are provided if the doctor thinks you need them, and some can even be mailed right to your home.

How do you use Hims?

Hims appointments are accessed via your phone or desktop computer with a webcam and microphone. Once you’ve scheduled your appointment, Hims will send you an email with a link to the session. You’ll tap or click this link to join the appointment at the scheduled time. If you have a question for your provider, you can check in with them through the Hims secure messaging portal.

How much does Hims cost?

Appointment type Price
Primary care $39
Psychiatry $59 for an initial visit, $49/month for follow-ups and medication delivery
Hair loss treatment From $22/month

Does insurance cover Hims?

Insurance does not pay for Hims because the company uses subscription services that most plans don’t cover. These monthly plans include treatment packages for hair loss, acne, and erectile dysfunction medication. Your insurance might cover the cost of medication if your doctor on Hims prescribes it, however. Prices for primary care and psychiatry are much lower than you’d pay for an in-person appointment, on average.

What does Hims treat?

Hims is largely focused on care for men’s health issues, with treatment plans tailored to meet their specific needs. Doctors on Hims can also treat more than 30 primary care and urgent care conditions, including cold and flu symptoms, infections, headaches, and allergies. If you’re experiencing COVID-19 symptoms, Hims can send you an at-home saliva test kit that provides results in a few days. Licensed psychiatrists are available to provide mental health evaluations, and the company offers anonymous support groups led by licensed therapists. Individual therapy isn’t available at this time, however. Hims isn’t intended for emergency care for severe or life-threatening conditions.

Can Hims write prescriptions?

Doctors on Hims can provide you with a prescription if they think it’s needed after evaluating you. Most prescriptions are sent to your local pharmacy, but some medications can be shipped directly to your door. These typically include acne treatments, certain mental health medications, and medicated products for hair loss. Many other telehealth providers can’t prescribe drugs for erectile dysfunction, but you can get a prescription for them on Hims after a brief doctor’s evaluation.

When can you get a Hims appointment?

An account is required to see a doctor on Hims, and it takes just a few minutes to set one up. Appointment times vary and depend on the availability of each provider. After you set up an appointment, you’ll typically speak with the doctor in 24 hours or less. Appointments are generally provided during business hours and may not be available 24/7, but you’re free to send a message to the doctor whenever you’d like.

Can you pick a Hims doctor?

When you schedule your appointment, Hims will ask you about any symptoms you’re having and the reason for your visit. This information is used to match you with a doctor who’s best able to help you. Due to the matching system on Hims, you’re not able to choose which doctor you see in most cases. However, for psychiatric care, you can filter doctors, choose one, and schedule follow-ups with the same provider. All doctors on Hims must be board-certified, have a clean malpractice record, and hold an active license to practice in at least one state.

How can you get Hims support?

Hims offers live chat support on its website seven days a week from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m. Phone support is available during the same hours at (800) 368-0038. You can also fill out the email contact form or send a Twitter DM to @askforhims. If you’re contacting Hims about a prescription, you will need to verify your identity as the account holder and provide a shipment number or order ID.

What Customers Say About Hims

Bad reviews about Hims

After waiting over a week for my most recent subscription to arrive, it was missing items.”

The product did not work but it did give me a severe rash on my head and face and made my skin break out.”

I was completely ignored when it came to my assessment. Furthermore, the associate did not speak with my PCP as he said he would.”

Bottom Line

Hims can write prescriptions for certain lifestyle medications that most other telehealth providers can’t. With Hims, there’s no need to see an in-person doctor to treat erectile dysfunction or hair loss. Best of all, your prescription can usually be shipped discreetly straight to your door, letting you skip the trip to your pharmacy. This even includes some types of mental health medications, such as antidepressants. If you ever need support, Hims offers several ways to get in touch. Live chat via phone or its messaging platform makes it easy to get help whenever you need it.

One drawback of Hims may be its subscription model for some men’s wellness services. If you’re treated for acne or hair loss, for example, the company will send you medication every month unless you cancel. This may not be ideal if you just want to sample a product to be sure it’s right for you.
